Samsung – Smartphone sales to triple by 2011

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Smart phones are one of the buzzwords at the moment and its just not Apple and RIM.
It used to be the toy of the business person but has transformed this year into a phone for the Social Community user, gamer and mobile e-mail is on most people ‘need’ list now.

Samsung expects the smartphone market to double in the next three years, and it predicts sales will rise from 170 million units in 2009 to 500 million by 2012.

These predictions mean the smartphone market would rise from 14% of the mobile phone sector to 29% in three years.

With Apples recent announcement of revenue of US$8.16 billion, a net quarterly profit of $1.21 billion, the Smartphone market seems to be embracing rather than whethering the financial crisis and Samsung obviously feel they can go even harder with there forecasts.

The company is hoping to capitalize on this growth by bringing out high-end handsets like the Omnia HD, which is powered by Symbian, and has an 8-megapixel camera that can record video in high definition.

I really believe that in 2 or 3 years most people will have a Smartphones and we will wonder how we lived without them!

This chart surprised me!!

Of course no surprise to see the under 25’s group leading the spending on a mobile phone but the fact the 35 – 44 and 45 – 54 spend almost the same per month and its only $15 less than <25 year old's was not what I expected...looks like EVERYONE is on the same Mobile train! Would love to see a further break down on this as where data and voice split for each user group!
